I visited Kenya and Rwanda in 2020 following the August reopening of both countries, during their traditional high season. While I found it incredible to see a fraction of the tourists in these iconic destinations, I also recognized with a heavy heart that it meant a world full of travelers stuck at home, longing to experience the cultures and landscapes of East Africa. I predict that bucket-list destinations will come front and center as the world returns to travel—and my hope is that we can all try and visit in a responsible way.
